How to become a Volunteer or Intern

SCAN provides a unique environment to make a difference in your community as a volunteer or student intern. SCAN offers a variety of volunteer and student intern experiences for individuals 16 and older. Opportunities for those interested in becoming a SCAN volunteer or student intern are available in administrative, programming and production roles. SCAN's Volunteer Manager provides overall leadership to the development and implementation of the volunteer efforts within the agency. The Volunteer Manager maximizes the use of existing volunteers and agency resources to recruit volunteers and works in partnership with SCAN's production and administrative staff to orientate, and train new volunteers.

All volunteers at SCAN are required to attend an initial orientation, complete a volunteer application, provide information to the Volunteer Manager for a confidential background check, and if interested in becoming a Content Provider and/or a Content Producer attend other appropriate classes and training based on their individual interest areas, skills set and knowledge needs. The Volunteer Manager will help to facilitate the classes and trainings required for your interest area.

There are several options for volunteering and/or becoming a student intern at SCAN. One of the best options is to work on the crew of an existing program. This is a fantastic way to learn about the inner workings of a TV show and gain broad experience. In addition to the programming needs within SCAN, there are also administrative needs where experiences can be gained as a receptionist, grant writing and fund raising in Development, writing press releases, producer's profiles and other tasks in Public Relations and Marketing. Other areas where volunteers and interns can gain experience include video equipment and training, fundraising videos and event recordings volunteering in cameras, sound, lighting, editing and studio production.
